Rogue Comms

Communication that changes minds by showing how things could be.

Five shifts to reframe your communications and move from reaction to strategy.

We present the facts, expose the violations and shed light on the suffering. But still the injustice goes on, and it feels like people don’t care anymore.

What if there was another way? What if we spent as much time spreading our values as we do in reactive mode? What if you could infuse the passion you feel for your cause into your communications?

In a world where fear, hate and outrage are the default setting of our politics, the truly rogue form of communication is based on hope.

Hope-based communication is a five-shift reframing tool anyone can use in their daily work to show how things could be. It applies neuroscience and psychology to create deep comms strategies that change how people feel, think and act.

Join us now and start training your hope muscle.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

You too can communicate like Zohran Mamdani and unlock authentic, inspiring storytelling.

If you are struggling to get your message across and counter fake news and populist narratives, this course will help you find another way.

Everyone who works in social change has a powerful story to tell. But words alone will not change narratives. Instead of raising awareness with broadcasting information, we change awareness: we change minds through action. Communication today must be visual and physical: you have to be able to bring your message to life through action and story.

I developed hope-based communication so that everyone can do reframing, narrative change and communicate strategically. Too often, these skills and tools are inaccessible for busy activists. This course breaks down those barriers so that you build the strategic comms muscle needed to thrive in the age of politicised algorithms and AI slop.

Hundreds of activists around the world are already using hope-based communication to spread new narratives, persuade target audiences and inspire their supporters to action.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • Use the five hope-based shifts in your daily work. This course will teach you a simple method for narrative reframing. You’ll develop your own bespoke hope-based checklist and shifts tool.

  • Think like a strategic communicator who can not only persuade but find new ways to achieve your goals.

  • Feel confident working on narratives. Recognise harmful or fear-based narratives and reframe them with messages of your own.

  • Use simple tools to create powerful messaging that resonates with audiences, wins debates and changes narratives.

  • Apply neuroscience and psychology to social change and political communications. If we want our communication to change minds, we need to understand how the mind works.

Above all, the hope-based approach is about practically applying new insights from fields like neuroscience and psychology to activism. This community aims to empower its members to become leaders in their sectors driving these changes. We want our members to spread the hope-based approach far and wide.

The Course

Have you tried to communicate without ever feeling heard? You’re not alone. So much communications training either shoehorns corporate communications or journalism approaches onto activism: but we need a specific approach.

This course is different. This is communications training designed for activists, progressives, and changemakers. It takes the most effective elements of public relations and political communications and applies them to the mission of the social change communicator: making grassroots voices heard and getting people to care about our values.

First created at Amnesty International in 2017, the hope-based communication methodology has been honed through hundreds of workshops delivered by dozens of trainers all around the world.

Our course takes you through the five hope-based shifts so that you can start reframing your daily work right away. Your communication strategy can be more than report launches, milestones, and crisis response: you will start to set the agenda and shape the narrative.

Hope-based communication

The FOUNDATION: Practice the five hope-based shifts and use them for reframing your current work.

What is hope-based communication?

1.1: Fear to Hope - The role of hope in dark times

1.2: Problem to Solution - Offering alternatives

1.3: Against to For - Change the Narrative / Grow your narrative instead of reacting to others

1.4: Threat to Opportunity - Give people a chance to be part of change

1.5: Victim to Human - Nurture empathy

VOICES FROM
THE ROGUES

"Learning about hope-based communications has changed my perspective on my work. I also helped me find my voice on shaping the work that we do in my organisation and in human rights field, and helped me connect with like-minded, cool people with whom the main message of the approach resonated well."

“Working with Thomas and becoming a Hope-Based Communications trainer has given me language for and a confidence in the kind of change I always sensed was possible, but didn’t quite know how to articulate. Learning the five shifts and putting them into practice has of course changed how I approach my work, but it's also changed my daily conversations and how I approach everyday life. What I love most about the Hope-Based framework is how intuitive it is. The shifts activate hope and make it accessible — anyone can learn them, anyone can practice them, and anyone can become an expert in spreading active hope. As a trainer, Thomas holds space with clarity, humility, care, and humor, and models how to move from reacting to the world to reimagining it. Since becoming certified, I've led workshops for private sector groups, philanthropy, and civil society, using the five shifts to point our collective gaze toward the world we want to build.”
